Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, and Bioinformatics from Towson University is a Campus Bachelor Bioinformatics degree that prepares you for a Science career. Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, and Bioinformatics are dynamic, rapidly evolving, modern disciplines that have significant impact on the way we live our lives today and will certainly be even more influential in the future. The areas of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry have revolutionized science in the last few decades, and play a critical role in virtually every aspect of the life sceinces, including such vital areas as medicine, pharmacology, ecology, chemistry, environmental science, and agriculture. Bioinformatics combines the advances in biochemistry and molecular biology with the power of computer-based information technology. The far-reaching impact of these new disciplines has changed the way we fight disease, produce food, monitor the environment, and deal with crime. They have literally transformed our society, our language, and our economy. The explosion of the commercial applications of these disciplines which has resulted in the biotechnology industry, has changed the economy of the world. Maryland has one of the largest concentrations of biotech industries anywhere in the world within 60 miles of Towson University . This societal transformation and economic explosion has produced a vital, ever-growing demand for individuals with solid interdisciplinary training in these areas. The Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, and Bioinformatics Program at Towson University integrates the expertise of four distinct departments - Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Mathematics and Computer and Information Sciences. Students electing to pursue a degree in this major will take core courses encompassing all three areas of the major, as well as additional courses in a Concentration that will allow them to specialize in one of those three areas. The Molecular Biology Concentration examines the molecular basis of life. Molecular Biology uses molecular approaches to understand the processes of living systems, and has applications in all areas of biology. The Biochemistry Concentration also examines the molecules of life, with emphasis on the chemical structure and reactivity that shape biological function. The Bioinformatics Concentration involves the application of computer science to the study of the molecular basis of life. Students need not make a decision as to which Concentration they will follow immediately upon entering the program, and may elect to choose a Concentration after completing many of the core courses common to all three tracks. All students in the program are expected to participate in a mentored hands-on research experience that will support and nurture their development as scientists. There are multiple opportunities available to obtain such hands-on training both with Faculty at Towson and neighboring universities and with business partners. Students completing the Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, and Bioinformatics Program will be well prepared for graduate studies or direct entry into the workforce in the areas such as biochemistry, bioinformatics, biophysics , biotechnology, cell biology, immunology, microbiology, or molecular biology. The curriculum also provides a very good preparation for students interested in medical or dental school. View more details on Towson University .
