The painting, drawing , printmaking program offers opportunities for the beginning student to build basic skills, learn techniques, and develop visual understanding in lower-division course work, and advance to greater specialization and self-direction in upper-division work. The goal of the curriculum is the integration of technique and artistic vision. The emphasis in painting, drawing and printmaking is on fine art, preparing the student for graduate work, a career in a gallery or museum, or continuing development as a professional artist, art teacher, or master printer. Painting and advanced drawing are housed in two new, large studios, complete with state-of-the-art ventilation and north light. One has a smart classroom and critique space, and also holds some individual studio spaces for advanced undergraduate students. Printmaking is housed in the John Blair Mitchell Print Studio in the Center for the Arts. The facility includes two lithography presses, with beds up to 40 inches wide, and three etching presses, with beds up to 36 inches wide. The studio also features a darkroom for light-sensitive printmaking processes, as well as computers, scanners, and an inkjet printer for student use. An extensive state-of-the-art circulation system ventilates the facility, and a large window-lined wall provides the studio with natural light. A letterpress shop is shared with the Graphic Design concentration. All printmaking students are granted open access to the studio and its resources. The painting, drawing, printmaking area operates the undergraduate Storage Space Gallery in room 4033 of the Center for the Arts. The gallery hosts up to ten undergraduate exhibitions and installations each semester. Students in any concentration in the department may apply to exhibit their work in this space. The painting, drawing , printmaking faculty are all active artists who work in their studios and exhibit, and share their professional experience with students.
