The majority of Ph.D. research programs in the Department are focused toward the biomedical and environmental problems of the region. Our goal is to prepare students for research on the pressing problems of the region and the nation, with an emphasis on (1) the pathogenesis of infectious diseases, (2) the toxic and carcinogenic effects of environmental pollutants, (3) neurological and metabolic disorders, and (4) environmental biology. The Biology Building currently contains some 48,000 square feet of teaching and research space, and the Biosciences Research Building is a 70,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility housing research laboratories, core facilities in cell culture, molecular biology, and protein characterization, a computing center, and auditorium. We provide students a comprehensive program of both course work and research designed to prepare them for an academic or industrial career in biological sciences.
