Liberal Arts - The New School

Liberal Arts from The New School is a Campus Master Liberal Arts and Science degree that prepares you for a Liberal Arts career. The Master of Arts degree is awarded for completion of 30 credits and a written master's thesis. There are two required courses, GLIB 5101, Modernity and Its Discontents, normally taken in the first semester of study, and GLIB 5301, Proseminar in Intellectual and Cultural History, taken after a student has an approved thesis topic. The remaining 24 credits are electives. Each student designs a plan of study to meet his or her intellectual needs with the assistance of a faculty advisor. The Liberal Studies Curriculum: A New Kind of Program The graduate program in Liberal Studies program is designed to facilitate interdisciplinary study and an independent approach to learning. At the heart of the experience are two courses: The introductory seminar Modernity and Its Discontents (NLIB5101), introduces themes and texts that serve as touchstones for a shared conversation inside and outside the classroom over the two years of the program. The other required course is the thesis writing workshop, Proseminar in Intellectual History (NLIB6301), required of all students as they begin to write a master's thesis. Each student is assigned a faculty advisor upon entering the program. The advisor helps the student clarify research interests and take advantage of educational resources available at The New School . Apart from the two required courses, students may take any course offered by the Committee on Liberal Studies that they consider appropriate to their scholarly needs. They are also encouraged to explore with their faculty advisor courses offered by other departments of the The New School for Social Research. During their second semester in the program, students begin working with their advisor to formulate a thesis topic and identify an appropriate thesis advisor.
