The Geospatial Applications program provides a comprehensive instruction in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), photogrammetry and remote sensing and Global Positioning Systems (GPS). Geospatial techniques are used to aid in decision making in fields as diverse as business, marketing, homeland security, public policy, environment, engineering, public health, archeology and criminal justice by identifying patterns between graphical information (maps) and data. A unique aspect of the CCBC Geospatial program is the incorporation of real-world situations in all courses, starting at the introductory level. Students learn software and development techniques in a realistic environment. The Associate of Applied Science degree is offered for students planning to transfer to a four year institution to complete a bachelor's degree. The sequence of courses may be taken full or part time. Courses are offered both day and evening. Students may enter the program at a level commensurate with their experience. Students who successfully complete the requirements for an A.A.S. degree in Geospatial Applications will be able to: 1. practice the principles of geospatial applications through laboratory experience, client-based projects, internships and additional outside of class activities and discussions; 2. determine how GIS can be used to visualize data in other disciplines (e.g., commerce, disaster management and response, politics, homeland security, planning and education, crime, etc.); 3. evaluate spatial information gathered for timeliness, authority, accuracy, validity and completeness; 4. prepare maps using GIS and remote sensing software to visually represent data and apply appropriate tools for spatial analysis; and 5. describe and implement the steps in developing a GIS project and produce appropriate maps and reports.
