Art Education from The College of Saint Rose is a Campus Master Teaching degree that prepares you for a Education career. The master of science program in art education is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). While there are more than 1,000 art programs in the U.S., fewer than 200 share this distinction with Saint Rose. The Center for Art and Design offers three different programs that meet the certification needs of those who are certified provisionally or initially in art education and are pursuing professional certification in New York state, as well as those who have a background in fine arts but no teaching experience. Students with a master's degree in art education are qualified to teach art in New York state in levels K-12, or work in educational programs in museums across the country. The curriculum emphasizes studio work, offering students the opportunity to concentrate in one of four areas: drawing/painting, sculpture, printmaking, or photography. Within this program, you'll develop your identity as an artist as well as a personal philosophy in art education. Many of our graduate students enjoy individual studio spaces. We encourage you to visit our school to tour the facilities, especially our studios, and to meet our faculty. We believe the best art educators are competent in both studio and education . Our graduates are artists who share their appreciation and advanced knowledge of art with children of all ages in a classroom setting. No other program in New York places an equal amount of emphasis on the studio art. This unique expectation, supported by our curriculum, enables students to have a thorough understanding of the theory of teaching art and an awareness of the federal and state standards of art education. The MS in Art Education programs include coursework in studio art, art education, art history, and aesthetics. As part of the curriculum, you will spend a semester lab teaching at a local school that does not have art teachers on staff. You'll learn valuable teaching skills while opening the world of art to children who may not otherwise share in the experience. During the last full semester, you'll work with students at area elementary, middle, or high school as a student teacher. The program culminates with a thesis exhibition of work. This degree satisfies the academic requirement for both initial and professional certification in art education . A master's degree is necessary to teach art in New York state. After completing the program and earning a satisfactory score on the New York State Teacher Exam, students receive initial certification. Students receive professional certification after teaching art for three years in public or private schools and completing the exam for professional certification. Non-credit courses in substance abuse and child abuse must also be completed throughout the duration of the program. The College also offers a 21-credit Certification-Only program for candidates (artists) who already hold a master's degree in art and are seeking initial certification so that they may teach art in public and private schools.
