Program Format: Campus Program Level: Bachelor

Biology from The College of New Rochelle is a Campus Bachelor Biology degree that prepares you for a Science career. Students in our Biology Program are afforded the opportunity to study the phenomena of life, both in the laboratory and the field. Course offerings emphasize the nature of biology and, in particular, the relevancy of the subject matter to current social concerns, the contribution of science toward the human effort to seek truth, and the essential task of integrating this knowledge with other disciplines within the framework of a liberal arts education. A major in Biology at CNR examines the fundamental elements of areas in the biological sciences and the related fields of chemistry, physics, and mathematics, and develops the technical skills and intellectual capacity to examine natural phenomena objectively. Students are required to enroll in a colloquium series which helps develop critical thinking skills, an appreciation for biological literature, and sharpens oral and written communication skills as they relate to scientific writing and presentations. This innovative colloquium series has been recognized nationally as a "Program That Works" by Project Kaleidoscope, a program funded by the National Science Foundation and the Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education. In senior year, under the direction of a member of the faculty, students may choose to conduct original research on some as yet unresolved biological question. This research is problem-oriented and provides opportunity to integrate undergraduate training in biology. Upon completing the undergraduate degree in Biology, students are equipped to enter a variety of career tracks or to pursue further training in graduate or professional school (medical, dental, veterinary, podiatry, etc.). Entry-level career positions available as a biology graduate include technical work in the research and development divisions of animal, environmental, food science, quality assurance or medical laboratories and facilities in the private and public sectors. Graduates may also choose to pursue careers in the sales and marketing divisions of publishers, pharmaceutical companies, and scientific supply companies. Three full-time faculty are supplemented by a laboratory manager and several adjuncts. The physical facilities of the Biology Department consist of seven laboratories, a photography laboratory, two animal rooms, a greenhouse, and microcomputer facilities.
