Maritime Systems Engineering from Texas A & M University at Galveston is a Campus Bachelor Marine Sciences degree that prepares you for a Science career. In recognition of the breadth of structural/ocean engineering, the MASE Department has developed two integrated areas of study: Offshore Engineering and Coastal Engineering. The study of Offshore Engineering addresses the design of marine structures; the calculation of wind and wave forces on marine structures; hydrodynamics; design criteria for marine structures; and ocean engineering technology. The study of Coastal Engineering addresses the applied engineering technologies associated with the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of coastal structures and facilities including breakwaters, piers, wharves, channels and pipelines. Coastal processes and offshore engineering involving integration of structural, geotechnical, and construction are strong themes of the program. The MASE program is characterized by small class sizes, which allows easy interaction with faculty and other students. Program Outcomes Each MASE graduate shall demonstrate the following before graduation: (1) sufficient knowledge of fundamental scientific principles and computational techniques for application to offshore or coastal engineering situations (2) ability to analyze, model, and solve complex problems in marine structural engineering and hydrodynamics (3) ability to design comprehensively either offshore or coastal systems or components with realistic constraints in a team setting (4) ability to effectively present design/project reports or other technical material to clients or other expert or non-expert audiences (5) an appreciation of the socioeconomic, geopolitical, ethical, and environmental issues that surround engineering in the oceans and the coastal zone (6) an appreciation for the value of advanced study or professional development.
