To obtain a doctoral degree in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching, students must fulfill core requirements and complete a dissertation. The core requirements include: 90-points minimum of total coursework, including up to 40 credits that may be transferred from previous graduate study, the foundational year-long course C&T 5000, successful completion of the qualifying examination (also called the certification or "cert" exam), at least three research methodology courses, selection of courses that fulfills one of several possible concentrations, enrollment in dissertation seminar (C&T 7500/7501), and completion of a dissertation, including proposal and oral defense stages. Students may choose to enroll as either full-time or part-time students. Many doctoral students, for example, take two courses in each semester during their first year while they continue working, often in jobs in teaching or administration in the local area.
