American Studies from SUNY at Geneseo is a Campus Bachelor American Studies degree that prepares you for a Liberal Arts career. The American Studies Program at Geneseo is designed to acquaint you with the challenges and diversity of the American experience, past and present. The program offers structured knowledge of our culture's many dimensions. The program in American Studies also allows you the opportunity to pursue an interesting, diversified, yet coherent liberal arts program, one that can serve as the basis for lifelong learning. The Program As an American Studies major, you will be exposed to all facets of our nation's culture. Coursework will include American History, Literature, the arts and society. Internships American Studies majors and minors can gain practical work experience and earn academic credit through the American Studies Internship Program. The program offers placement throughout the year in such agencies as the Livingston County Historical Society, the Livingston County Historian's Office, the Genesee Country Museum, the George Eastman House, the Rochester Historical Society, the Landmark Society and many other institutions in the Genesee Valley area. Arrangements can also be made for you to intern at an agency in your hometown during the summer. Depending on the needs of the agency and your interest, an intern may assist in preparing displays, serve as a tour guide, do archival research, collect historical artifacts or help to develop public relations materials. Career Opportunities A major in American Studies can be a springboard to a wide variety of careers: museum or historical work, law, librarianship, teaching, journalism, business and public relations.
