The Program in History at Stevens allows students to peer into the past as they analyze the present and prepare themselves for the future-all the while paying special attention to the ways that science and technology inform and influence that future. No fields of human endeavor have advanced faster or influenced our lives to a greater degree than science and technology, and no university stands more firmly at the intersection of science and the humanities than Stevens. With this unique perspective, and in keeping with the mission of the College of Arts and Letters, it is our goal to use historical research to provide a deeper understanding of our world through an examination of science and technology and their impact on human existence. In addition to traditional courses in American and world history, Stevens' history majors take a course load that emphasizes the importance of science, technology, engineering, and innovation. Students in the History Program enjoy an interdisciplinary approach to learning. Students learn to understand the evolution of the discipline of history in concrete cause and effect relationships, and be able to discern schools of interpretations such as cultural history , Marxism, cliometrics (quantification), digital history, oral history , postmodernism, gender based studies, transnational history, and others. In their coursework and their own research projects, History students at Stevens learn to develop their individual research skills; they also learn to contribute to research activity as part of a working team, and facilitate cooperation among the members of the team resulting in a successful project. Most importantly, students learn to become a professional and a colleague in a community of inquiry that maintains a lifelong investment in history and in the pursuit of learning -- about themselves and their place in the world around them.
