After the first year in the program, each student works closely with one or two individual faculty members and elects an individual specialization with a focus on learning and instruction, the cognitive psychology of school subjects, teaching and teacher education, the psychology of individual differences, educational measurement, statistical methods, or some related domain of inquiry. Specialization may be within a single branch of psychology , or may involve interdisciplinary work. All students are provided opportunities for direct participation in ongoing research, as well as course work both within and outside the School of Education. Preference in admissions is given to students interested in pursuing research careers and with some prior background in the behavioral or social sciences, usually psychology .
