Program Description The Fire Science Technology program is designed to prepare students for entry-level careers as firefighters for municipal, industrial, state and federal fire departments. The primary mission of the Fire Science Technology program is identification and mitigation of emergencies in order to preserve life and property. Program Goals Have a thorough knowledge of the Civil Service Examination process. Handle basic fire fighter and rescue responsibilities. Have a keen awareness of fire and safety problems relative to property loss adjustments. Have a well-rounded technical background for entry into fire service or rescue related fields. The duties of the firefighter include, but are not limited to, extinguishing and controlling fires , performing rescue and evacuation work incidental to fire control, accidents, natural disasters, and other incidents where human life is threatened. Firefighters also render emergency aid to those in need. The responsibilities of fire prevention, inspection, and public relation programs aimed at reducing death and property loss are also undertaken. Students who have completed the Spokane Regional Recruit Academy or equivalent for career personnel may be eligible to receive up to 37 credits toward a fire science degree . Career firefighters who have completed 1,000 hours of paid work experience may be eligible to receive up to 18 credits of cooperative education. Career Opportunities Increasing demands for better private, municipal and governmental involvement in fire prevention and suppression fields, and the implementation of more career fire departments in formerly volunteer-protected areas, will provide an increase in the demand for entry-level fire fighters.
