Emergency Medical Technology. from Southern Union State Community College is a Campus Associate Medical Emergency degree that prepares you for a Healthcare career. Students enrolled in the Emergency Medical Technology Program may choose to earn a certificate or to earn the Associate in Applied Science Degree in Emergency Medical Technology. The first semester, a certificate of completion is earned following completion of the EMT Program. Upon successful completion of the EMT Program, the student is eligible to apply to take the National Registry Examination. Successful completion of the certification examination allows the student to apply for licensure to practice in the State of Alabama as an EMT. Upon completion of the second semester, a certificate in Advanced Emergency Medical Technology (AEMT) is awarded. Upon successful completion of the AEMT Program, the student is eligible to apply to take the National Registry Examination and apply for licensure to practice in the State of Alabama as an AEMT. The Paramedic program is three semesters in length and leads to an Occupational Certificate or an Associate in Applied Science Degree. An Occupational Certificate requires the student to successfully complete all paramedic and general education courses in the curriculum, with the exception of PSY 200, SPH 107, and the Humanities elective. To earn an Associate in Applied Science Degree , all paramedic and general education courses in the curriculum must be completed.Upon successful completion of the Paramedic program, the student is eligible to apply to take the National Registry examination for Paramedics. Successful completion of the certification examination allows the student to apply for licensure to practice in the State of Alabama as a Paramedic. The Emergency Medical Services Programs are fully approved by the Alabama Department of Public Health, Emergency Medical Services Division and by the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the EMS Professions (CoAEMSP).
