Field and studio production courses use state-of-the-art cameras and editing equipment to prepare students to take positions in the media production industry. There are also numerous opportunities to gain professional experience by working on programs that air on WSIU Public Broadcasting. Post-production facilities include a full complement of editing and multimedia software, allowing student producers to bring their imaginations to life. The Video Production specialization consists of courses that include live studio production, field production , lighting, scriptwriting, production design, narrative production , documentary and animated graphics. Students typically augment their technical and creative coursework with television industries and studies courses that challenge them to think about television and their own work in new ways. An undergraduate degree specializing in Video Production prepares students for entry-level and supervisory production positions at major studios, network and cable television outlets, and at emerging media companies that create video games, Internet apps, and mobile content. A Video Production major can provide the creative and technical expertise that one needs in order to produce media for independent distribution or sale to broadcast networks and cable television. Video Production students can choose to pursue graduate degrees in programs such as media studies and industries, media production, fine arts media, and other related fields. Our students have access to a wide range of professional digital video camcorders, in both standard (DV) and high definition (HDV) formats. Supporting equipment includes full field production audio packages with shotgun and wireless microphones, and several Arri and Lowel lighting kits for creative control in all lighting situations. We have two large television studios with four NEC SP30 cameras and a jib, a Genie lift, and modern lighting systems on a 15.5 foot high grid that are controlled by a multiple-scene, pre-set console. For post-production, our New Media Center houses the latest Macintosh desktop computers with large screen monitors and a variety of peripheral devices such as DVCAM video recorders, scanners, microphones, and headphones. Video software includes the Final Cut Pro Suite, Avid Media Composer, After Effects, Photoshop, Flash, and other Adobe applications.
