The Science Specialization is Plant , Soil and Agricultural Systems provides a well-rounded education in Plant Science. It provides the basics in biotechnology, plant pathology, plant breeding, plant genetics, plant genomics, plant physiology, horticulture, field crop production, and soil science, allowing the student greater flexibility to pursue other specialties. What facilities are at SIU? Several facilities are available for students to obtain hands-on work experience, including the Horticulture Research Center (HRC). The HRC houses greenhouses and field and research laboratories. Undergraduate classes and labs are frequently held at the Center to provide hands-on learning experiences. In addition, there is a state-of-the-art genomic facility. Internships with various crop and green industries are encouraged to broaden learning experiences and are available through our partnerships with various companies and government agencies. What are my career opportunities? A wide range of excellent career opportunities are available for students graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Plant, Soil and Agricultural Systems. These careers include: colleges/universities (research, teaching, cooperative extension); soil conservation and management; golf course and sports turf management; agricutlural consulting; agrichemical companies; seed and plant production; tissue culture and diagnostic labs; botanical gardens and arboreta; biological control; nurservies and garden centers; or governmental agencies (for agricultural research, forest, and animal and plant health inspection services).
