Equine Science from Southern Illinois University Carbondale is a Campus Bachelor Equine degree that prepares you for a Agriculture career. What will I study? Being a great horseman requires an intimate understanding of the horse in its entirety combined with the ability to use that knowledge for the horse's benefit. At SIUC, the Equine Science specialization provides instruction, demonstration and real-world hands-on experience by combining science, management, physical skills and practical horse sense. Courses are also offered in all phases of animal production and management, including animal health, reproduction, physiology, genetics, biotechnology, nutrition, training and riding. The Equine Science specialization emphasizes the application of science in the production and management of the equine species. The curriculum provides problem-solving and hands-on training by utilizing the University's farm system. Completion of the curriculum requires a one semester horse industry internship. The program is the only Equine 4-year Bachelor of Science program offered in the State of Illinois. What facilities are at SIU? The SIUC Horse Center, along with the Metabolism and Physiology Center, is home to approximately 50 horses representing many breeds, ages, experience levels and uses. The Equine Science specialization offers beginning-to-advanced levels of riding classes and maintains a commercial horse breeding operation. The facilities utilized include classroom, laboratory and farm settings. The 2,000 acre SIUC farm system is the core of our Equine Science teaching program. Most students aspire to management positions in the horse industry. Practical animal, farm and personnel management experiences are provided as an integral part of the curriculum. Students are responsible for the care, raising, training and marketing of horses from the SIUC horse herd. What are my career opportunities? When compared with other industries, the equine industry directly employs more people than railroads, radio and television broadcasting, petroleum, coal products manufacturing and tobacco product manufacturing. Career opportunities for Equine Science graduates are numerous and diverse. Most students prepare for a future in management at breeding facilities, lesson stables, race and show training stables or boarding facilities, but there are many, many other careers available related to horses. Some other career opportunities available are college instruction, breed associations, feed and pharmaceutical sales and research, event management, human organizations, cooperative extension and horse publications. If your interests lie more within the medical field, there are several unique opportunities available to you such as equine massage/physical therapy, veterinarian technician, laboratory animal technician, and therapeutic riding. SIUC also offers studies in equine reproductive physiology leading to a Master of Science degree in Animal Science. A Ph.D. is available through the Department of Physiology at SIUC.
