Overview of Graduate Program Graduate work leading to the Masters of Science degree in civil engineering is offered by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The program is designed to provide advanced study in the areas of structural engineering , environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering , water resources engineering. Graduate work leading to the the Ph.D. in Engineering Science is offered through the College of Engineering. A concentration in Civil and Environmental Engineering focuses on courses and research activities in water and wastewater treatment technology, hazardous and industrial waste treatment technolgy, geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering, hydrologic and hydraulic design principles, water resources systems, and structural and seismic analysis and design. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering requires that applicants to the MS program hold a bachelor's degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering (or equivalent), or have completed all undergraduate degree requirements prior to registration, with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (A = 4.00) for the last 60 hours of undergraduate work. Students having a GPA between 2.7 and 3.0 will be considered on a case-by-case basis. All applicants are required to submit GRE scores in support of their applications for admission (minimum scores: 400 Verbal, 570 Quantitative, 3.5 Analytical Writing). The GRE scores must be less than five years old at the time of registration. Applicants whose primary spoken language is not English must provide an official TOEFL score of at least 550 (test center) or 220 (Computer based) or 80 (internet based). The TOEFL score must be less than two years old at the time of registration. IELTS are accepted in place of the TOEFL and must be a minimum of 6.5. (Minimum requirements for GRE verbal and analytical writing may be waived if the student's TOEFL score is greater than 570 (test center) or 230 (computer based) or 82 (internet testing), and he/she possesses good communication skills.)
