The new Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering program has been established at Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 2008. As of 2008 only four universities in the State of Illinois offer master's program in biomedical engineering: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Illinois at Chicago, Northwestern University, and Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The Biomedical Engineering program at Southern Illinois University Carbondale , in contrast to other similar programs, is university wide. Four colleges are the major participants: College of Engineering , College of Science, College of Agricultural Sciences, and School of Medicine with the College of Engineering as the leading unit. A committee of six Professors from the four colleges oversees the program with one Professor from the College of Engineering serving as the Coordinator and Chair of the program. Any qualified student in any discipline can join the program. Students can do their research work in any of the above four colleges with the approval of their graduate committee. The program offers two master's degrees: Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering and Master of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering. Mission The mission of the program is to provide students with diverse academic backgrounds (life sciences, physical sciences, medicine, psychology and all traditional engineering disciplines) with the opportunity to develop expertise and pursue rewarding careers in this promising and rapidly expanding area of Biomedical Engineering.
