The Emergency Medical Services Program at Griffin Technical College is a multi-level training program that includes the Emergency Medical Technician Certificate of CREDIT, the Paramedic Technology Diploma and the Associate of Applied Technology Degree in Paramedic Technology . Students interested in pursuing education and training that prepares them to provide medical care and transport of the sick or injured patient should participate in the Emergency Medical Technician certificate which represents the entry level program and is prerequisite to either the Paramedic Technology diploma or degree for those applicants not currently certified as Emergency Medical Technicians . This program is also appropriate for individuals wishing to provide medical first response in business or industry and those wishing to serve as emergency department patient care technicians. The EMT certificate is offered on a part-time basis over three quarters. Courses in the curriculum are sequential in nature, so students may enter only once a year. Students are encouraged to complete developmental studies requirements prior to enrolling in any EMS courses. Due to the success and popularity of the EMT certificate, it is not unusual for first time applicants to be put on a waiting list. Developmental studies may be completed while a student is on the waiting list. Graduates are eligible to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians EMT-I85 certification examination in order to attain state EMT certification. THE DIPLOMA PROGRAM The Paramedic Technology Diploma is a sequence of courses that prepares students to properly assess and provide advanced emergency medical care to patients who are acutely ill or injured. Note that current EMT certification or successful completion of the EMT Certificate of CREDIT is prerequisite to enrollment in the Paramedic Technology Program. This program offers students a variety of clinical opportunities to assist in the management of patients ranging in age from newborn to elderly. Students experience clinical accessibility to patients with such conditions as injury due to trauma, infectious diseases, congenital anomalies, acquired lung disease, renal failure, distressed newborns, and many more categories. Limited general education courses are required for program completion.
