Journalism/Public Relations from Southeastern University - Lakeland is a Campus Bachelor Public Relations degree that prepares you for a Communications career. Telling Stories That Matter Whether in the realm of politics, sports, or human interest, there are new stories happening every day that need someone to tell them. Journalism is storytelling with a noble purpose, providing people with important information that affects their lives. With an increasing number of media sources competing for everyone?s attention, Christians must be a part of this profession. In order to fulfill Christ?s call to be responsible citizens of our local and global communities, people need fair, honest and accurate information about their world. As a journalism/public relations major at Southeastern, you will gain the skills and experience to inform citizens of developments in their communities and elected governments. Those who pursue the public relations track will master the nuances of communication to shape effective messages that will move the audience to action or cause a change in attitude. You will be well-equipped to have a positive impact on society by helping companies, elected officials, or non-profits with Christ-centered motivations make their messages heard. The Community as a Classroom Southeastern?s journalism/public relations program begins with our Christ-centered liberal arts (general education) core curriculum, where you develop an understanding and appreciation of God and His creation, human creativity and reason, and our place of responsibility as stewards in the world God has made. As you forge links between what you?ve learned in the core and the more specialized courses in your major, our hope is that you also begin to relate all that you learn to your life and your faith. Within the journalism/public relations major itself, you will study the theoretical underpinnings of mass communications, learning about the history of journalism and the role of an independent press in a democratic society. Classes in media law and ethics will give you the tools for the critical analysis needed to make news-related decisions within tight time frames ? a challenge journalists face every day. As journalism adapts to advancing technology, journalists are increasingly required to write for multiple media ? print, Internet, radio, and television. We ensure that students are equipped to meet the challenges that rapid technological change is bringing to this profession. As a journalism/public relations major, you will take courses in writing for radio, television, newspapers, internal publications, and magazines. You also will study layout and design, elements that complement the written word. In these classes, you will learn how to package written communication in a way that is both attractive and helpful to the reader. At Southeastern, class sizes are small, allowing teachers to work closely with you. Our communication professors will coach you as you conduct research and interviews in the real world and report stories that matter to the community. Students have ample opportunity to hone their craft and see their work published in The Southeastern Times campus newspaper, the Department of Communication newsletter, and on Southeastern?s student Intranet and marketing Web sites. After their junior year, Southeastern journalism/public relations majors are strongly encouraged to complete a summer internship. There is no better way to prepare yourself for a journalism job than by interviewing, writing, and editing articles on deadline for publications. Internships provide professional experience, giving Southeastern graduates a leg up after graduation. Southeastern students have completed internships at Newsday, National Geographic, Steps Magazine?a publication of the National Association for Christian Recovery, and at network television affiliates in major media markets. What's Next? Southeastern graduates hit the ground running upon graduation. Their education often allows them to begin jobs at a higher level than their peers.
