This program is designed to benefit individuals new to pharmacy and current pharmacy technicians interested in enhancing their skills and formalizing their training. Pharmacy technicians who work in hospital or drug store pharmacies perform different tasks than those who work in mail-order fulfillment. Technicians who work in nursing homes, hospitals or care facilities haveadditional duties than those who work in other areas. In general, a pharmacy technician may perform the following duties: Receive and verify prescriptions, prepare medication for customers/patients through mixing, counting pills and labeling bottles. They may also price and fill prescriptions, prepare patient paperwork or insurance claims, and they may inventory and stock medications. Additionally, retail pharmacy technicians may inventory and stock over-the-counter medications and supplies and act as a cashier. Pharmacy technicians who work in patient care facilities are responsible for reading patient charts, preparing medications, verifying the prescription with the pharmacist and delivering it to the patient. Technicians also consult doctors, nurses and other health care professionals regarding patient information, allergies, etc. to determine optimal patient care.
