American Sign Language Interpreting for the Deaf from Sinclair Community College is a Campus Associate Sign Language degree that prepares you for a Liberal Arts career. This program prepares students for entry level interpreting/transliterating positions in which deaf or hard-of-hearing persons and hearing persons need to communicate. It provides an opportunity for students to develop skills in American Sign Language and manually coded English. It also provides a basic understanding of deaf culture, interpreting ethics, and legislation having an impact on individuals with disabilities. This program is approved by the Ohio Department of Education to meet the standards for a five-year license as Interpreter for the Hearing Impaired. A transfer articulation is available to students planning on completing a four-year degree in Sign Language Interpreting from Wright State University. Program Outcomes Recognize the difference between deafness as a cultureof an American linguistic minority as oposed to solely a medical condition. Understand the unique characteristics, cultural norms, and processes of the Deaf community. Interpret entry level terminology commonly encountered in medical, education, technical, legal, counseling and business settings. Demonstrate basic conversational skills and use of appropriate American Sign Language vocabulary, fingerspelling, and numbers. Explain the myths that have surrounded deafness throughout history. Articulate the legal rights of Deaf citizensin the United States. Articulate the ethics and protocol of professional interpreting. Produce accurate American Sign Language vocabulary and sentence types using correct grammataical structure. Articulate selected aspects of Deaf culture. Articulate the historical changes in the interpreting profession. Explain the models of interpretation. Perform as an entry level interpreter in a variety of settings using the techniques of consecutiive interprettion. Explain the primary issues involved with Deaf, hard of hearing and Deaf-Blind prsons and access to interpreting services, education, employment, health care, mental health and social services. Transliterate, at an entry level, spoken English into English related sign varieties and vice versa.
