Now add streaming video, blogs, podcasts, books, recordings, DVDs, movies, photography, cable, advertising, and public relations, and you begin to see the pieces of the communication/journalism puzzle come together. What careers can be found in communication/journalism? Professional communicators find jobs in all branches of communication/journalism. You've known or heard about most of them: journalists, Web designers, radio and television reporters, editors, sports directors, radio announcers, television producers, program directors, disk jockeys, photographers, advertising salespeople and copywriters, and public relations professionals in business, industry, government, and education. What is the job outlook? Excellent, if you are prepared. The mass media are powerful channels of communication that hire people with talent and experience, in good or bad economic times. But, as in other professions, tough times can hurt the communications job market. However, there's always room for someone with the proper training and experience. Are there internship opportunities? At Shippensburg, we think internships are vital to the success of a communication/journalism student. Internships allow students to use their classroom and student media experiences in a professional setting. Internships are a necessary step on the path to an entry-level job. How do I prepare to be a communication/journalism major? Write. Writing is the most important skill of a successful communicator. The Department of Communication/Journalism curriculum is built around writing. To be a good writer, you must also be a good reader. And, keyboarding skills are essential. So, get your language skills in good shape (grammar, spelling, punctuation, vocabulary, usage, etc.), and you'll have a better chance for success as a communication/journalism major. What kinds of courses will I take? All our majors take several basic courses for developing general knowledge and skill, such as Introduction to Mass Communication, Media Writing, Communication Law, and Senior Capstone. Then, students with a public relations emphasis, electronic media emphasis, or print media emphasis each take a series of required courses in their area of interest, such as Public Relations Writing, Writing for Electronic Media and Public Affairs Reporting. And you can elect to take courses in another emphasis for a broader education. For example, a student with emphasis in print media can take several broadcast or public relations courses as well.
