The Doctor of Pharmacy program at Shenandoah University is offered in a "state-of-the-art" facility located on the Winchester Medical Center campus. This facility houses a health professions library and a uniquely designed computer center to enhance learning and promote the use of information technology. The School of Pharmacy continues to recruit individual faculty who are accomplished teachers, researchers and clinicians, who present a dynamic curriculum designed to meet the educational needs of pharmacists for the future. The experiential component of the curriculum will afford students the opportunity to work with practitioners in a variety of exciting practice environments. This diverse training program allows students to explore different areas of pharmacy practice while gaining a wealth of practical experience. The first pharmacy class was conferred the Doctor of Pharmacy degree in May 2000, and sat for the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy Licensure Examination. The School of Pharmacy was originally accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education in June 2000. The Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) program at Shenandoah University offers a "2 + 4" and a "3 + 4" design. The pre-pharmacy curriculum requires a minimum of two years to complete the pre-requisite 65 semester hours of course work. Pre-pharmacy requirements may be completed under the chemistry degree program (pre-pharmacy concentration) at Shenandoah University or transferred from another accredited academic institution. In the "3 + 4" program, Shenandoah pre-pharmacy students complete pharmacy pre-requisite and general education courses, enabling them to earn a B.S. degree after the first year in the pharmacy program. The four year professional curriculum is crafted to integrate didactic courses and experiential clerkships within the framework of 142 semester hours. Students are admitted each year into the four-year professional PharmD program at both the Winchester and Ashburn campuses. A small percentage of each class will have been pre-admitted two years previously as freshmen at Shenandoah University. Because of the highly selective admissions process and the competitive nature of the Pharm.D. program, freshmen admitted as undergraduate pre-pharmacy students will be monitored carefully throughout the two year pre-pharmacy program. Admission to the Pharm.D. program is not guaranteed to anyone entering the pre-pharmacy program.
