Students will complete a minimum of 360 hours of externship (9 credits) plus 280 hours of experiential study under the direction of a hospitality/tourism field supervisor. The program emphasizes the use of historical sites and cultural as well as geographic resources in the promotion of the Western Pennsylvania region. One of the program's vital components has a series of three externships designed to expose students to the inner workings of the hospitality business. These translate into off campus experience in one or more phases of the industry. Students participate in the day-to-day operation of the hospitality organization. Progress through the externship leads to skills developed for management level positions. Students take a series of courses on Special Topics in Western Pennsylvania Hospitality and Tourism which will include, but not be limited to, Architectural Tours, Battle Grounds, Bike and Hiking Trails, City Tours, Frank Lloyd Wright in Western Pennsylvania, Gaming and Casino Management , Museum Tours, Wines & Vineyards, Beer and MicroBreweries, Conservation Tours, Regional Festivals, Waterways and Railways.
