Overview The B.S.E. for secondary education majors prepares socially conscious teachers who understand the current issues and purposes of education. Working closely with College faculty and mentor teachers in local middle and high schools, teacher candidates become familiar with current curricula in their chosen major field and develop skills in classroom planning, teaching and assessment that allow them to confidently address the needs of diverse learners in grades 5-12. The Secondary Education program is nationally recognized by professional associations. A Unique Approach Secondary education students take practice-based, technology-infused courses together as a cohort group, meaning they complete requirements together throughout the program and work in teams on projects and in the field. Teacher candidates are immersed in field experience opportunities in local middle and high schools in both suburban and urban settings. Early in the program, a focused tutoring program enables them to see the difficulties middle school students face in learning basic skills and new material, as well as discover ways to help students gain confidence in school and test taking. In another field experience, secondary education majors assist teachers with discussion-based approaches. In Project Citizen they see how a project-based, interdisciplinary program operates in the classroom. In Deliberations in Democracy, they learn how to structure current and controversial discussions. More advanced field experiences allow candidates to teach small and whole group lessons and lead to the senior clinical practice where candidates plan and teach a full class load. Secondary education majors are also members of SEA Pirates, a lively club that funds an endowed scholarship and participates in social and service activities such as an annual Fashion Show (reviewed by The New York Times), sports tournaments and Christmas and Easter parties at local schools; provides funding for the Special Olympics; and gives presentations to future students and other groups. Who Should Apply? Students interested in seeking careers as middle school and high school teachers in the fields of art, English, mathematics, music, science, social studies and world languages should apply. The Program The B.S.E. for secondary education is a four-year undergraduate program with a minimum of 120 credits required for graduation. Students pursue a double major, completing teacher education courses, University core course requirements and a full major of their choice through the College of Arts and Sciences. Specialized field experiences allow secondary education candidates to work one-on-one with students, addressing learning problems and leading small groups and team projects. In more advanced experiences, students teach small and whole group lessons, which allow them to practice planning, teaching and assessment skills. During the senior clinical practice, students gradually plan and teach a full class load, receiving support and evaluation from a trained supervisor and cooperating teachers. All students are prepared to teach with technology and are part of the University's Mobile Computing Program. During their classes and field experiences, SCED candidates develop samples of their best work that they can compile in a portfolio for employers to view. The professional education sequence leads to the Bachelor of Science in Education and eligibility for endorsement as a teacher in specified areas, in the state of New Jersey. The sequence of courses is based upon the standards of the following national and professional associations: The Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium Specialty associations that have recognized individual majors: English (NCTE), Mathematics (NCTM), Science (NSTA) and Social Studies (NCSS) Career Advancement Graduates from our program typically teach in a variety of settings, including public and private schools. With certification that can cover grades K-12, candidates are well prepared to be hired to teach in their academic fields.
