Dance from Scripps College is a Campus Bachelor Dance degree that prepares you for a Art and Design career. Academic Goals and Objectives The Scripps Dance curriculum serves dance majors, dance minors, and the general student community of the Claremont Colleges through a variety of introductory level and advanced courses. Although the focus of these classes varies depending on the level, content, and pedagogical style (i.e. studio vs. lecture), we have certain objectives that we strive to accomplish throughout our curriculum. We want students to: broaden their awareness of what dance is through movement experiences as well as historical study; tap into their creative powers and develop an understanding of the forming process so that they can make their own dance/performance works; develop an appreciation for what bodies can do creatively and on a purely physical level, and develop their personal technical skills so that they can dance expressively with a well-trained physical instrument; learn how their bodies work and take responsibility for their bodies in and out of class in order to avoid and/or manage injury; develop observational skills, aesthetic judgment, and the ability to articulate their ideas through verbal and writing skills, as well as through movement; and engage in interdisciplinary experiences which allow and encourage them to make connections to other academic and personal interests. The Philosophy of Dance Scripps dance classes, noted for individualized instruction and course work, are open to all students regardless of their majors. Cross-disciplinary connections are encouraged and supported. Because the department is small, performance and choreographic opportunities are available to all students. Technique classes may be repeated until the student is ready to advance to the next level. Customarily this takes two semesters. The Scripps Dance Program focuses on the study of bodily movement as it conveys and informs individual experience and expression, and as it teaches us about ourselves and other cultures and times. It is designed for the student who loves dance but wants a broader education than a conservatory program would provide, either because she has other strong interests and does not want to restrict her options at this point in her life, or because she has concerns about her ability to be competitive as a performer and wants to explore other ways of channeling her passion for dance . The program also aims to serve the general student body by providing connections to other disciplines and by providing experiences that increase awareness of the importance of movement as a medium of expression and representation. Although excellence in technical dancing is encouraged and supported, the program is more concerned with students finding their personal connection to the art form than with mastery of a particular dance style. As such, the program is centered around the study of modern dance because it seems to provide the broadest, most functional approach to movement. Also, modern dance has evolved partly in response to women's concerns and seems particularly relevant to Scripps as a women's college. Although Scripps dance classes are non-competitive and emphasize sound warm-up and stretching techniques, dance is a strenuous physical pursuit that places greater demands on the body than everyday activity.
