What is Art Conservation? Each time someone asks me about my major, I brace myself for the same amazed (and often confused) questions: "Is that a self-designed major?" "So you take... a lot of art?" No, I say, it's a Scripps major. I then list the unusually diverse subjects required for the major: studio art, art history, anthropology, archaeology, and chemistry. The follow-up query ? when did you discover you were interested in art conservation? ? conjures no moment of epiphany or revelation, however. What I do know is that this fusion of many disparate interests into one career solidified into conviction during my time at Scripps College . My mother is an artist. My father is a family physician. With my new major, I am almost exactly in the middle. But I cannot give genetics all the credit; it takes an open mind to realize science and the humanities intersect, sometimes so closely that picking them apart into separate classes would be like reversing the decomposition of calcium bicarbonate upon heating, or like un-carving a piece of marble sculpture back to its original state, fresh from the quarry. Were it not for the creation of this new major, my two passions of art and chemistry may have never met each other. I have achieved a happy medium between the left and right sides of my brain, and am now embarking on a scientific, aesthetic, and fascinating path of study. View more details on Scripps College .
