Small Engine Technology is a 1080 hour program. Small engine mechanics repair fractional horsepower gasoline engines for lawnmowers, garden tractors, motorcycles, ATV?s, and similar machines. In this program, students learn to identify problems, dismantle engines, and repair or replace parts. During this program students will learn the theory behind the operation of two and four cycle engines . They will have the choice of several different areas to specialize in, such as chain saw general service, comprehensive small engine repair , motorcycle and ATV general service, lawn and garden equipment repair, and snowmobile general service. UNDERSTANDING/INTERPRETING SERVICE MANUALS & ELECTRONIC TESTING EQUIPMENT ~ 90hr/3cr Understand how to use the Parts Smart Computerized Parts and Service Program, microfiche, CDROM service manuals, and text manuals. Students will use these sources of information to look up parts, service/maintenance procedures, utilize tech service bulletins, and many other useful bits of information. In addition, students will identify how to use electronic equipment such as volt meters, OHM meters, digital tachometers, infrared digital thermometers to name a few. Trouble shoot and diagnose safety switches, ignition systems, and various engine operating systems. SMALL GAS ENGINE REPAIR 2 & 4 CYCLE ~ 90hr/3cr Introduces the repair and maintenance procedures for both 2 and 4 cycle engines . Interactive theory and performanced based tasks will be utilized to complete instruction. SMALL GAS ENGINE CONSTRUCTION ~ 180hr/6cr Summarizes how to inspect each part during a major or minor rebuild of a small gas engine , how to diagnose component damage and measure engine wear. SMALL GAS ENGINE OPERATION ~ 180hr/6cr Introduces students to the various systems used by small gas engines for operation. Electrical, lubrication, governing, and carbueration to name a few. ADMINISTRATIVE FUNCTIONS/CHAIN SAW GENERAL SERVICE ~ 90hr/3cr An advanced look at small engine fuel systems and lubrication systems in addition to lawn and garden equipment repair , including the hydraulic system. Diesel engine operation injection system function, equipment maintenance, and brake system. Will also introduce drives, cutting chains, oiling systems, and sharpening on chainsaws. OXY & ACETYLENE GAS CUTTING~ 90hr/3cr An introduciton to oxy-acetylene gas cutting and welding units. Explains equipment care and maintenance, set-up of equipment, and metal preparation. MIG WELDING ~ 90hr/3cr Explains the use of MIG welding equipment and how to maintain such equipment. TRACTOR DRIVE GEAR SYSTEMS ~ 90hr/3cr Introduces the different types of tractor drives and their maintenance, operation, and repair. INTRO TO MOTORCYCLE & ATV GENERAL SERVICE ~ 90hr/3cr Identifies suspension components, theory of hydraulic braking systems, cable operated components, and ignition systems. Basic service procedures on motorcycles and/or ATV?s. SMALL ENGINE CUSTOMER SERVICE ~ 90hr/3cr Use the latest systems in the field to perform various functions such as billing, parts look-up, inventory control, warrenty claims, ordering, and customer interaction. ELECTIVE PREPARATION FOR PA STATE INSPECTION LICENSE ~ 30hr/1cr Review use of measurement tools and learn facts associated with PA State Inspection License for motorcycles.
