Ornamental Horticulture/Environmental Landscaping from Schuylkill Technology Centers is a Campus Certificate Enviroment degree that prepares you for a Science career. Ornamental Horticulture/Environmental Landscaping is a 1080 hour program. This exciting and diverse career has much to offer the outdoor enthusiast concerned with their environment. Ornamental Horticulture is the study of the "Green Industry". The industry which includes but is not limited to Environmental Planners, Arborists, Nursery and Greenhouse Technicians, Floral Designers, and Groundskeepers. The Environmental Planners are the first and last people on the site of new construction. The Greenhouse and Nursery Technicians are people that grow all of the plants that are both arranged and planted. The Arborists and Groundskeepers are the people who maintain golf courses, commercial and residential buildings. This program prepares you for a multitude of jobs and a variety of employers waiting for a trained person to join their team. INTRO TO HORTICULTURE/BOTANY ~ 90hr/3cr This course covers safety, horticulture mechanics, employment opportunities, plant taxonomy, plant parts, and function and growth with participation in the Local FFA Club. PLANT IDENTIFICATION I ~ 90hr/3cr This course focuses on the identification, culture, and landscape uses of mostly native and some introduced trees, shrubs, and vines. This course features plants that bloom in the summer and fall, as well as plants that display autumn foliage and fruits. FLORAL DESIGN ~ 180hr/6cr This course covers American and European history of floral arranging, floral styles, elements, and principles. course will also cover the use of containers, bases, accessories, tools, supplies, and plant materials. This course also focuses on basic floral design techniques while creating birthday, hospital, anniversary, table, and mantel arrangements with the use of fresh and dried natural materials. DESIGN PRINCIPLES ~ 90hr/3cr This course introduces a student to the basics of perspective drawing, site analysis, and plant selection. The student will learn how to use the drawing tools necessary to complete these designs. It is a prerequisite to Final Design Process. ARBORICULTURE ~ 90hr/3cr This course will cover advanced pruning techniques used in Ornamental Horticulture . The student will learn all of the tools used in the trade along with rope-work. The student will also be introduced to Plant Health Care and tree values. ORNAMENTAL HORTICULTURE ~ 90hr/3cr The study of ornamental trees, shrubs, ground covers, and bulbs while using pruning and landscaping techniques to maintain ornamental plants. PLANT IDENTIFICATION II ~ 90hr/3cr This course focuses on the identification, culture, and landscape uses of mostly native and some introduced trees, shrubs, and vines. This course features plants that are evergreen and also plants that bloom in the spring. Plant Identification II may be taken before Plant Identification I. LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE ~ 180hr/6cr In this course the student is introduced to soils and growing media used in Ornamental Horticulture . The student will also learn to perform engine maintenance along with tool maintenance. LANDSCAPE CONSTRUCTION ~ 90hr/3cr This course covers the building techniques used in the built environment. It covers working with wood, stone, paving materials, and retaining systems. It covers irrigation and pricing. It prepares the student for contracting and bidding and keeping accurate records.
