Occupational Child Care from Schuylkill Technology Centers is a Campus Certificate Child Care degree that prepares you for a Human Services career. The Occupational Child Care program is a 1080 hour program. This program introduces students to the developmental stages of young children and some techniques recommended for encouraging the child?s growth. Students plan and lead activities for children of all ages. They will help children develop self-help habits, as well as maintain discipline and behavior management. The nutritional needs of young children are applied to meal planning and educational activities. Health and safety issues of children are explored. Child care program management skills and employer/employee relations are introduced. Clinical experience is arranged in several child care programs in the community. INTRODUCTION TO OCCUPATIONAL CHILD CARE ~ 90hr/3cr Study of information related to self-concept development theories and their impact on career selection. Explore job opportunities and responsibilities in the early childhood field. Includes historical aspect of early childhood education. DEVELOPMENTAL AREAS OF CHILDREN ~ 180hr/6cr Examines the cognitive, social, physical, and emotional development of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. Theoretical knowledge is integrated by identifying developmentally appropriate practices, activities and equipment selection. EARLY CHILDHOOD GUIDANCE & DISCIPLINE ~ 90hr/3cr A study of effective guidance methods which support the development of the child including the fostering of self-esteem and age-appropriate communication. Observation and recording techniques are developed. NUTRITIONAL NEEDS OF CHILDREN ~ 90hr/3cr The nutritional needs of young children are applied to meal planning, educational activities and compliance with program regulations. HEALTH AND SAFETY OF CHILDREN ~ 90hr/3cr Focuses on childhood illness identification, first aid response, and safe environments for young children. CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION ~ 90hr/3cr An introduction to the content and method for developing curriculum for early childhood education programs. Various learning styles and approaches will be presented. PLAN & PRESENT CHILDREN'S ACTIVITIES ~ 180hr/6cr Explores a variety of teaching methods and materials used in early childhood classrooms including story telling, puppetry, music, art, and motor skills. Activity preparation and presentation will be implemented. A continuation of topics and themes including food related, health and safety, and self-help skills for young children. Examines the importance of daily routines and recommended procedures. CHILD CARE PROGRAM MANAGEMENT ~ 90hr/3cr The course explores various types of child care service deliveries. Program management skills and employer/employee relations are introduced. CHILD CARE ROFESSIONALISM ~ 90hr/3cr Focuses on the qualities of a child care professional with emphasis on interpersonal skills, personal growth, ethical behavior, as well as the establishment of positive rapport between child's family and child care staff. An approved child care related topic will be researched and presented to incorporate skills and knowledge acquired in the Occupational Child Care field.
