Masonry from Schuylkill Technology Centers is a Campus Certificate Construction Engineering degree that prepares you for a Engineering career. Masonry is a 1080 hour program that provides the basic skills needed to work with block, brick, and concrete. Students learn block and bricklaying, how to mix mortar, and fundamental skills for placing and finishing concrete. Students learn the safe use and care of hand tools, such as trowels, jointers, and levels, that are used every day in the Masonry trade. MASONRY ORIENTATION & SAFETY ~ 90hr/3cr Includes all masonry materials and the terminology needed to work in the masonry trade. Safety is stressed, emphasizing every skill from stacking brick to mixing mortar in a mechanical mixer. BASIC BLOCK MASONRY ~ 90hr/3cr Students will build concrete masonry units. Demonstration projects will include corners and walls. Included is trade terminology associated with block masonry. BASIC BRICK MASONRY ~ 90hr/3cr Beginner masons spread mortar, apply mortar to the ends of brick, and lay brick. Projects include brick corners, brick walls, and brick piers. Students are challenged to build each structure level plumb and straight. Students design and build a personal project before completing this course. BONDING BLOCK MASONRY ~ 90hr/3cr Understanding size and shape of concrete masonry units. Demonstrate how to pattern bond block so corners will have the proper cuts to build corners as specified by the plans. The safe use of power tools and hand tools for cutting block is emphasized. BONDING BRICK MASONRY ~ 180hr/6cr Use of six different brick positions to construct patterns and designs for brick walls. Includes proper mortar mixes for bonding brick with other construction material. Demonstrate construction brick corners and walls using the different patterns and brick positions learned. ELDORADO STONE ~ 90hr/3cr Work with different types of Eldorado stone. Apply stone to a wood frame structure and masonry walls. Topics include procedures for finishing joints between the stone. ADVANCED BLOCK MASONRY ~ 180hr/6cr Includes terms, definitions and methods of construction practices related to advanced block masonry . Topics include mortar mixes, their strengths and uses, reinforcement of masonry walls, cleaning masonry walls, and estimating masonry supplies and materials. ADVANCED BRICK MASONRY ~ 180hr/6cr The focus of this course is to provide students with a knowledge of advanced brick masonry. Students will be expected to know terms and definitions related to types of advanced work being covered. Some topics to be covered include decorative walls, chimney construction, working from scaffolding, and mortar mixes. ELECTIVE ~ 90hr/3cr View more details on Schuylkill Technology Center .
