Automotive Technology from Schuylkill Technology Centers is a Campus Certificate Automotive degree that prepares you for a Engineering career. Automotive Technology is a 1080 hour program. Students enrolled in this program learn how to diagnose, repair, and maintain today?s modern and complex automobiles . This program is an ASE certified program dealing with all eight areas of automotive repair ranging from engine repair, brakes, steering and suspension, electrical, heating and air conditioning, transmissions, and engine performance. INTRO TO AUTO/DIESEL TECHNOLOGY ~ 90hr/3cr This course is designed to cover shop safety, shop management, and the use of service and repair manuals including electronic information systems. The student will receive training in the identification of tools, fasteners, and specialized equipment. The student will also be introduced to the basic operation, design, and theory of diesel engines, hydraulics, and air brake systems. ENGINE REPAIR ~ 180hr/6cr This course will cover disassembly, measurement, and reassembly of an internal combustion gasoline engine. This course will also cover the diagnostics and testing of an internal combustion engine. BRAKES ~ 180hr/6cr This course will cover inspection, diagnosis, and repair of the entire braking system. Operation of the brake lathe will be covered along with the operation and repair of the CABS (computerized anti-lock system). TRANSMISSIONS/DRIVE AXLES ~ 90hr/3cr This course will cover the design and operation of manual transmissions and transaxles. The diagnosis and repair of clutches, drive axles, and differential assemblies will be addressed. The course will also cover power flow and operation of an automatic transmission/transaxle. Also addressed will be auto trans service procedures and adjustments. SUSPENSION & STEERING ~ 180hr/6cr This course will cover maintenance, inspection, and replacement procedures for automotive steering and suspension systems. Instruction of two and four-wheel alignment procedures are included in this course. ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS~ 180hr/6cr This course will cover principles of electricity, starting and charging systems diagnosis, and other basic electrical competencies. The course will also cover in-depth diagnosis and repair of various automotive electrical and electronic systems. ENGINE PERFORMANCE ~ 90hr/3cr This course will serve as an introduction into fuel and ignition systems, computerized engine control systems, and exhaust systems. This course will also cover testing and diagnosis of computerized engine control systems and emission control systems. HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING ~ 90hr/3cr This course will cover the service of the entire cooling system as well as replacement of hoses, belts and flushings, and recycling of anti-freeze. ELECTIVES (Choose One) PA STATE INSPECTION CERTIFICATION ~ 30hr/1cr The student completing and passing this course earns his PA Inspection License enabling him to perform motor vehicle inspections. TECH-PREP WORK BASED ~ 90hr/3cr A method of training where the student works in industry for up to three (3) weeks without pay. The student learner works closely with the employer on tasks that were previously studied at school.
