Modern Art History, Theory, and Criticism from School of the Art Institute of Chicago is a Campus Master Art History degree that prepares you for a Art and Design career. SAIC has long been distinguished by its innovative curriculum in modern art history, theory, and criticism . SAIC's Master of Arts in Modern Art History, Theory, and Criticism program draws on the institution's setting in Chicago, with its wealth of historic architecture, public sculpture, numerous museums, and active gallery scene, including many alternative spaces and performance venues, libraries, and cultural facilities. The program is the most extensive of its kind in a professional art school in this country, and its curriculum allows for an expansive and diverse view of historical, theoretical, and critical issues relating to the fine arts and popular culture of the modern era. SAIC offers the only master's-level art history program in the nation to focus on modern and contemporary art history within the context of a professional fine art and design school. Our program is research-quality and prepares graduates for doctoral work or careers in research, writing, and curating in museums, art centers, and galleries; graduates have also found positions with archives and journals. Faculty are scholars who are actively engaged in their own research, and there is great diversity in teaching styles and formats?such as team-taught courses, lectures by visiting artists and scholars, local museum and gallery visits, and foreign study trips. Students work with their choice of SAIC faculty advisors from the moment they arrive on campus. Chicago is a world-class city with a vibrant art scene. Students have access to major cultural institutions such as the Art Institute of Chicago and its heralded Modern Wing, the Museum of Contemporary Art, as well as the numerous thriving artist-run galleries and community-based organizations in the city's independent art scene. Students also have access to all of the SAIC's libraries and research centers, including the Ryerson and Burnham Libraries, John M. Flaxman Library, Video Data Bank, Joan Flasch Artists' Book Collection, Fashion Resource Center, Roger Brown Study Collection, Poetry Center, and Gene Siskel Film Center. The Art History department has hosted numerous events and lectures, including the annual Stone Summer Theory Institute and Lifton Memorial Lecture, and the Visiting Artists Program has brought in such distinguished artists as Judith Halberstam, Paul Chan, Alma Lopez, House of Diehl, Mel Chin, Kalup Linzy, Natalie Jeremijenko, and George Kuchar.
