Art Therapy from School of the Art Institute of Chicago is a Campus Master Alternative medicine degree that prepares you for a Healthcare career. SAIC's Master of Arts in Art Therapy [MAAT] program is one of the oldest professional art therapy programs in the Midwest and one of the few such programs in the nation offered at a professional school of fine art and design. The program's mission is to provide a comprehensive art therapy education that emphasizes development of the artist/art therapist , prepares graduates to function as art therapists in a variety of settings, and fosters critical engagement within social and cultural contexts. SAIC's MAAT curriculum is designed to ensure students gain the knowledge and experience that will enable them to function as competent, ethical, and compassionate art therapy professionals. It is also designed to foster critical thinking, so students are actively involved in creating the learning environment, questioning dominant discourses in the field, and taking part in the production of new ideas. Graduates of the program become leaders in the field of art therapy in the areas of professional practice, research, and theory. Students in SAIC's MAAT program gain a minimum of 900 hours of clinical experience and complete at least two fieldwork placements?one working primarily with children or adolescents, and the other with adults or seniors. Available fieldwork experiences are vast, including inpatient psychiatry facilities, drug treatment centers, residential care, schools, and correctional facilities. MAAT faculty are leaders in the field, and have a wide range of scholarly and studio research interests. They are professionally active as evidenced by their publications, professional presentations, exhibitions, curatorial projects, innovative developments in practice, involvement in state and national professional associations, service on editorial boards of professional journals, and ongoing grounding in professional practice. Uniquely situated within one of the nation's most influential schools of art and design, students are encouraged to use their studio electives to explore their own creative practice by selecting coursework from across our renowned studio and academic departments. Students also have access to all of SAIC's amazing resources beginning with the renowned Art Institute of Chicago and its heralded Modern Wing. Additional resources include the Ryerson and Burnham Libraries, John M. Flaxman Library, Video Data Bank, Joan Flasch Artists' Book Collection, Fashion Resource Center, Roger Brown Study Collection, Poetry Center, and Gene Siskel Film Center.
