Our faculty encourage students to gain an understanding of traditional and contemporary approaches to painting and drawing, as well as ways in which painting and drawing complement other art disciplines, educational interests and social concerns. Beginning courses stress observational skills introducing the student to basic dynamics of composition, color theory, manipulation of space, light and surface, and the power and range of the physical media. Conceptual issues of representation and abstraction are introduced and explored. Intermediate and advanced students are encouraged to grapple with their own artistic voice and issues. A wide range of coursework such as large scale drawing and painting for public art projects, on-site painting and drawing of live animals, figurative painting, drawing and portraiture, abstraction, landscape, watercolor, egg tempera, casein and encaustic are offered regularly.
