Certificate of Proficiency in Diagnostic Medical Sonography is a 42-credit-hour program beginning only each fall semester that prepares students for entry-level employment. The program includes both classroom work and clinical education of approximately 1,400 hours in an affiliated sonography department. Students can choose from three program options: Medical Sonography , Cardiac Sonography or Vascular Technology. All curriculum options are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. Students attend full time and complete classroom work and clinical education in an affiliated sonography department. Students acquire skills in record keeping, obtaining and recording pertinent patient clinical history, performing the sonographic examination, providing for the comforts and needs of the patient during the examination, and recording the anatomic, physiologic and pathologic data for interpretation by the supervising physician. Sonography is a direct patient care profession. Sonographers perform examinations on post-surgical patients, assist patients who require emesis basins and bedpans, assist physicians with invasive procedures, perform sonographic examinations in the intensive care unit, and perform obstetric examinations on high-risk patients. Graduates are eligible to take the certification examinations offered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography for their curriculum options - Abdomen and OB/GYN for Medical Sonography , Adult Echocardiography for Cardiac Sonography, and the Vascular Technology Examination for Vascular Technology. Positions are available in hospitals, imaging centers, clinics and private physician offices. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, jobs for sonographers are expected to grow much faster than average through 2014. The department also states that in addition to job openings due to growth, some job openings will arise from the need to replace sonographers who leave the profession permanently.
