Landscape Architecture from Rutgers University - New Brunswick is a Campus Master Landscape degree that prepares you for a Architecture career. As awareness about the need to plan and design our future environment increases, the public demand for more responsive, sensitive and appropriate site design and land planning is increasing. The Rutgers Masters of Landscape Architecture Program has been established to respond to this need by providing a studio-centered, problem-solving pedagogy to students whose undergraduate degrees are in other areas (MLA 1); as well as by providing a more custom-tailored, post-professional program for those who have already received a professional design degree (MLA 2). While all landscape architecture programs, including ours, address the history, theory and practice of the profession, at Rutgers our graduate program additionally focuses upon the planning and design of build-out conditions?situations in which all available land is constructed at specified densities according to a general plan??. Clearly this is a circumstance with which we are familiar in New Jersey, but it is also one which is rapidly becoming the case in many other metropolitan areas across the nation (such as San Diego, California or Atlanta, Georgia). As undeveloped land becomes scarcer and more valuable to conserve, the importance of redressing past environmental excesses and social inequities becomes evident. These are not easy issues to address in our contentious public realm and they involve finding ways to work in a collaborative manner with others engaged in solving them. Rutgers landscape architecture faculty strengths include the topics of landscape remediation of post-industrial landscapes , regional landscape planning of the built environment, ecological site and regional design, community design and more. We consider the landscape from the intimacy of the private garden to the expansiveness of the geographic region and have both published and practiced widely, receiving national and international recognition for both our research and built projects. We are committed teachers whose experiences as scholars and practitioners provide our instruction with a trenchancy that grounds theoretical explorations with practical understanding of what it takes to make a difference in the world. Our position within the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences provides students with access to some of the nation?s top ecologists who have worked together with landscape architects on some of the country?s most innovative projects. The demand for professionals educated in the planning, design and management of the environment has increased dramatically over the past decade and continued job growth is expected. Employment opportunities in both the public and private sectors range from the individual consulting to large international multidisciplinary firms. Typical employment in the private sector includes landscape architectural, architectural, civil engineering, real estate development and construction management firms. Within the public sector opportunities exist from the local to the national level. Examples of public and quasi-public agencies which employ landscape architects include local planning and park departments, county planning and park commissions, the Department of Environment Protection, the Department of Transportation, the National Park Service, the National Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the Nature Conservancy, the Garden Conservancy, and the National Land Trust . In each of these examples, leadership positions require the additional skills and expertise provided through graduate education. Your MLA curricula at Rutgers are designed to provide you with theoretical grounding, approaches to complex problem solving, design processes, communication skills, and more. We invite you to visit our newly transformed facilities, speak with our students and faculty and apply to join us as we engage the environmental problems of our time.
