Since all substances are chemicals, an understanding of chemistry is vital not only to scientists, but also to all who make decisions in their personal lives as to health, lifestyle and choice of material things, and in their public lives as to issues such as clean air and water, nuclear power, and solid waste disposal and recycling. The chemistry/biochemistry department offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in chemistry . The B.S. degree in chemistry is certified by the American Chemical Society (ACS). Note that, should students major in biochemistry, they may not also major or minor in chemistry or biology. Prospective majors usually begin their study of chemistry and mathematics in their first year. However, students who have completed their first or second years would have no difficulty obtaining a degree , assuming they have been following another science-track major. Emphasis on laboratory work allows students to put into practice the theory that both text and lecture contain, while teaching basic laboratory skills and introducing students to modern instrumentation and scientific computer software. Two credits of undergraduate research are required of all majors, during which students might work with a faculty member on a project or might take advantage of summer opportunities at major research universities or in industry. Those students seeking a Bachelor of Science degree who intend to pursue an advanced degree in chemistry or biochemistry are strongly encouraged to take a foreign language. Beyond the traditional course work, chemistry and biochemistry students at Rockford College can pursue opportunities in internships, special topics courses, research and study abroad. Those interested in medicine may get clinical experience at local hospitals or with doctors as early as their sophomore year. Internships are available at local industries, and secondary teaching field experience is offered at local high schools. Students interested in overseas experience are encouraged to spend a semester abroad during their junior year. The chemistry/biochemistry department also offers courses designed for the non-science major, such as ?Chemistry in Our Environment? and ?Contemporary Nutrition.? These courses complement study in fields such as business, education, psychology, political science and the allied health areas, providing students with a foundation for making informed decisions as citizens. Career opportunities Rockford College students earning a degree in chemistry or biochemistry are especially well-prepared for graduate school, medical/professional school, or careers in chemical industry, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical sales, along with other health-related fields. Many of our students have gone on to become doctors, dentists, veterinarians, medical technologists or pharmacists. Still others have become secondary teachers through our state of Illinois-approved program for chemistry teachers. Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry The Bachelor of Arts program (28 hours) provides a solid background in chemistry while allowing students to fully explore other disciplines provided in a liberal arts setting. It is especially appropriate for high school chemistry teachers, preprofessional majors (with appropriate biology courses), sales and management personnel at chemical companies (with appropriate business courses) or those interested in patent law.
