The newly established Spanish majors provide students the opportunity to learn and gain proficiency in the second most spoken language of the international community. Currently, more than 10% of Americans consider Spanish their first language and at least 500 million people worldwide practice fluency. The ability to speak Spanish is becoming a helpful and even necessary part of some fields, including economics, business, medicine, social sciences, criminal justice and ministry. Professors and advisors value a broad, well-rounded understanding of the discipline. Hence, by completing the 33 hour Spanish major, students will gain competence not only in fundamentals of the language -- including grammar, composition and conversation -- but upper-level courses will expose students to Spanish literature , cinema, theatre, and culture. Faculty encourage students to learn through formal compositions, independent study of prominent Hispanic figures (authors, politicians, artists), and various readings. Undergraduate learners are presented with opportunities to improve their skills through conversational groups outside of class, private tutors fluent in the language, and various field trips offered throughout the semester. Upon successful completion of the program, Adolescence Education Spanish graduates are certified by New York State to teach Spanish in grades 7-12 with an extension for grades 5 and 6 and are prepared to continue their professional studies in education or Spanish at the graduate level. Many students choose to double major, combining Spanish with another discipline and thereby making themselves extremely marketable in today?s work place. Students majoring in Childhood/Early Childhood Education often select Spanish as their concentration field. With the growing population of Spanish speakers not only in the United States, but throughout the world, a knowledge of the Spanish language is proving increasingly valuable in bridging gaps and helping those in need.
