About the Program The Electrician program on Ridgewater?s Willmar campus prepares graduates for positions performing electrical work in residential and commercial construction and industrial and maintenance installations in accordance with the National Electric Code. This work includes installations of electrical devices and/or maintenance of existing electrical installations. The program starts with a base of developing problem-solving skills through course work in basic electricity/electronics and applied mathematics. Based on that foundation, students move into more complex areas such as motor controls; service and transformers; specialized systems (generators, fire alarms, security systems, etc.); and heating, venting, and air conditioning. This diverse curriculum provides a broad knowledge base to program graduates, opening up many opportunities in the vast field of electricity. Curriculum includes course content on energy efficient lighting and heating/cooling systems, photovoltaic solar systems, and power management systems. This curriculum exposes Ridgewater Electrician students to ?green? technologies and techniques demanded by industry today. Students benefit from the hands-on experience of wiring two newly constructed homes, including one built using ?green? products and technologies. The Electrician program is approved by the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry as one year of credit toward a Class A Journeyman?s License and is accredited by the Department of Labor and Industry, Electrical Licensing and Inspection Division. Instructors are licensed as Class A Master Electricians with a combined 50 years? experience in the electrical industry. An electrician may perform maintenance work in industrial plants, office buildings, hospitals, or public buildings. Some electricians may specialize in particular fields such as motor rewiring, machine tool manufacture, appliance repair or industrial controls.
