As a primarily undergraduate institution, our main goal at Rider University is to offer our students an outstanding education. Our six highly qualified and motivated full-time faculty members are strongly committed to ensuring that students successfully complete our program, and find placement in any number of careers including industrial science, science education, or admission into a graduate or professional school. We achieve our mission by addressing three main foundations. 1. A diverse, enriched, and stimulating academic experience Given the size of our institution, our chemistry and physics classes are notably small (25-40 students), especially in the upper level courses (10-15 students). This allows for close, frequent interaction between students and professors, creating a stimulating learning environment. Furthermore, our major programs are approved by the American Chemical Society (ACS), which means that our classes are nationally and internationally recognized as providing adequate experimental skills, oral and written communication skills, and knowledge that prepare our students to be future professionals. Chemistry students at Rider University have challenging and engaging experiences in the five areas of chemistry: analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry , as well as biochemistry. 2. A rigorous, rewarding, and well-rounded laboratory experience Our small department size further fosters an intense hands-on experience in the laboratory. Solid training in laboratory technique is not only emphasized in all courses, but we strongly encourage all chemistry and biochemistry students to pursue other research experiences beyond the classroom: * All of our Chemistry & Biochemistry faculty are currently engaged in cutting-edge and challenging scholarly research projects, and work alongside undergraduate students in their laboratories to address relevant issues in medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, organic synthesis, inorganic chemistry , and physical chemistry. Our department is thoroughly equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation and facilities, preparing students for careers in modern scientific laboratories. * Because of our prime location in the midst of many pharmaceutical and biotech companies, Rider has a long-standing relationship with many local industrial chemical and pharmaceutical laboratories. This close proximity has resulted in a wealth of internship, externship, and other fellowship opportunities for our students, during the summer or academic year. Furthermore, our Internship in Science course allows students to work in an industrial lab for college credit. The experience our students can gain in the workplace is one of our greatest assurances that they can obtain employment as an industrial scientist. Our close partnerships with local industry inform our faculty of the directions of industrial chemistry , which allows us to provide training in areas useful to industrial needs. The resulting academic and technical training that our students receive have been recognized by many local chemical and pharmaceutical corporations as being more than adequate for entry-level research positions. 3. A strong commitment to personal advising Our primary focus is on our students. The small size of our department allows for easy accessibility to faculty. We pay close, personal attention to each student\\\'s academic needs with continuous advising through their college years.
