The Department of Textiles offers a broad-based education in many aspects of fabric, fiber and pattern. The program emphasizes a thorough understanding and integration of the design process, structure, materials and techniques. The faculty supports the development of students as artists and designers who will energize the field through personal vision and understanding of the larger artistic context of the discipline; and an awareness of the wider cultural and social context of their work. The undergraduate program in Textiles at Rhode Island School of Design encourages individual artistic expression, whether in design for industrial and hand production, or in fine arts work. Students develop their own personal direction while strengthening basic design issues and skills. Sophomores learn various methods of print design, silkscreen, weaving, knitting and dyeing; juniors concentrate on more advanced techniques as they begin to develop their own concepts. The senior year culminates in a project that defines an individual area of interest, mode of working and future direction. Throughout the program, students are encouraged to broaden their perspectives by taking courses in other disciplines. Close connections to the professional world are maintained through internships, seminar speakers and interactions with visiting artists and critics. All undergraduate students have to meet an eighty-four credit studio requirement which includes eighteen foundation credits and sixty-six major/non-major credits. Of those sixty-six, forty five must be in textiles and twelve must be non-major studio electives. The remaining nine credits can be taken in or out of the department. This gives students greater opportunity to branch out by taking more courses in other disciplines. All undergraduate students are required to take Surface Design, Fibers and Dyeing, From an Idea to Meaning, Fabric Silkscreen, Weaving I, and knitting Machine Techniques during their sophomore year. CAD in Textiles is required in the junior year. All other junior and senior level courses are major electives and students are encouraged to select courses based on their individual interest and direction.
