All students work with an advisor to formulate a proposal designing a program that meets their education and career goals. An important standard for entrance to the Letters , Arts, and Sciences major is to design a program with academic integrity, worthy of a Bachelor of Arts degree . The program includes four core skills requirements: research proficiency, critical thinking, application of theory, and communications skills. In consultation with an academic adviser, you design your own program, selecting upper level courses that support your interests and goals. You may follow a study track in Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences, or Liberal Studies, and you may create a minor in one of six academic areas. You must write a proposal explaining your choice of courses. The program is especially attractive to adult students who have some college credits and want an interdisciplinary program and to students who wish to prepare for specialized careers for which there are no specific academic majors available. For example, one graduate designed his LASCC program to prepare for a career as an environmental advocate by integrating study in rhetoric and science. Another graduate, a successful science writer, used the LASCC program flexibility to concentrate on science and English to prepare for her profession.
