The faculty who teach in this program combine innovative classroom, field, and laboratory methods that will help you to develop the knowledge and inquiry skills that you will need in order to enter the workforce or to pursue more specialized graduate training. In keeping with the mission of the college, our goal is to produce knowledgeable, productive citizens in an increasingly scientifically complex world. Biology and Environmental Science Both of these programs help students to gain scientific knowledge and skills. However, the main focus of the Biology Program is to offer broad training in all aspects of biological science, ranging from the molecular to the ecosystem level. The curriculum is designed to incorporate the following aspects of a well-balanced education: Inquiry Skills - These encompass the most fundamental aspects of science inquiry, from observation and reasoning skills, to the design and execution of scientific investigations, to the analysis and presentation of scientific information in oral and written formats. Biological Knowledge - This includes scientific vocabulary, a grasp of central biological principles, and information that is specific to the molecular, cellular, organismal, and ecological levels in the hierarchy of Life on Earth. Social/Ethical aspects of biological sciences - Understanding the place of science in society is a key aspect of biological literacy. In this program, your training will be conducted in the context of major issues facing the world today, from the general societal use and misuse of scientific knowledge to specific issues such as genetic engineering, the causes and health effects of pollution, and the documentation and preservation of biodiversity.
