Program Overview The English Department at ORU emphasizes literature that embodies the \\\"good, true and the beautiful\\\" of Western civilization. From this perspective, students also have the opportunity to explore non-Western literature and minority voices foundational to American culture and to discover their own voices through literary writing. The English Department endeavors to enhance students\\\' knowledge of their literary heritage, to refine and craft their skills of analysis, synthesis and evaluation and to express themselves in the art of writing as well as relate their Christian faith to their culture. The writing major is designed for students interested in writing and wanting to pursue a career in editing, writing, publishing, business, advertising and related areas. A writing major is also good preparatory work for graduate studies in law, theology and communication arts. Students who select the writing major study the basics of both literary and technical writing, but they are able to design their programs so as to emphasize one or the other. Students interested in literary writing take courses acquainting them with modern literature and training them in writing in various genres, such as fiction, poetry and drama. They learn to improve their writing skills and express their creativity effectively, and they have opportunities to attend off-campus workshops and to submit their work for publication. They also gain practical experience in on- or off-campus internships. Students interested in technical writing focus on editing, publishing, writing and web design in the corporate world, such as brochures, manuals, newsletters, business reports, advertisements and web pages. Students learn how to write for specific audiences and purposes, to access and evaluate information, to revise for clarity and conciseness and to design and format appropriate layouts. Students also learn computer skills for searches, desktop publishing and presentations, and they receive practical experience in on- or off-campus internships. Students majoring in writing may add a concentration (12 hours) to their course of study. Writing majors may use their seven hours of electives plus 5-6 additional hours for the concentration, resulting in the degree total of 133 hours with a concentration instead of the 128 without a concentration. Concentration areas Art (ART) (English literature and writing majors): An art concentration can benefit writing majors who help design brochures, web pages and other documents involving graphics. Biblical Literature (for English literature and writing majors): Students who are interested in literary analysis and theory may wish to pursue these as they apply to Biblical literature. A knowledge of the Bible prepares students for Christian ministry in a wide variety of roles, especially as teachers and leaders. Writing for Business (for writing majors): Writing and the business world complement each other as writers work in such fields as publishing and the travel industry. The business concentration helps prepare writing majors with practical knowledge for writing and editing brochures, manuals and grant proposals in a business environment. Church History (for English literature and writing majors): Knowledge of Church history and theology gives students of literature a deeper knowledge of the historical contexts that all the arts are grounded in. This concentration prepares students for Christian ministry, especially as teachers and leaders. Church Ministries (for English Literature and writing majors): This concentration provides background for active Christian ministry within churches, in outreach and in pastoral care. Community Development (ICD) (for English literature and writing majors): Following ORU\\\'s vision to \\\"go into every person\\\'s world,\\\" many graduates seek to serve people and communities both inside and outside the U.S. The concentration in community development helps prepare students for service-oriented work. ESL (for English literature and writing majors): Many students majoring in English go on to teach English in foreign countries. The ESL concentration is designed to help prepare English or writing students for such work abroad. (No prerequisites required.) Journalism (for writing majors): Writing majors often work in the world of journalism: newspapers, magazines, etc. A journalism concentration can help prepare students for this workplace. Writing for Marketing (for writing majors): Writing majors often work for the business world in areas related to marketing; therefore, a marketing concentration can help prepare students for the workplace. Missions (for English literature and writing majors): The concentration in missions will help the student preparing to teach or be involved in Christian ministry in foreign countries Pre-law (for English literature and writing majors): The writing and English literature majors are excellent programs for students interested in pursuing a legal career because they foster communication and critical thinking skills. Science (for writing majors): Students pursuing a writing major can focus on technical writing, which often involves writing in the science fields. A science concentration can help students learn concepts and terminology relevant to the writing experience. Technology (for writing majors): Students pursuing a writing major learn to work with technology, and this concentration allows students to supplement the technology component in the writing major.
