Concentration Areas Instrumental In addition to participation in weekly keyboard, orchestral instrument or audio workstation lessons, students selecting the instrumental concentration participate in a lecture-discussion-demonstration course for those anticipating a career as a professional musician in a performance group, a soloist, an instrumental teacher in public or private schools or as a private studio teacher. Keyboard The keyboard concentration is for students interested in keyboard performance and/or anticipate studying at a graduate level. Students choosing the keyboard concentration will participate in a lecture-discussion-demonstration course focused on a future profession in individual or group studio teaching. Vocal In the vocal concentration, students gain experience with the International Phonetic Alphabet and its application to English and Italian vocal literature and examine specific management issues relating to the use of phonetics in the vocal ensemble. Students also participate in a lecture-discussion-demonstration course that familiarizes students with the main elements of human sound production and basic vocal faults. Teaching and diagnostic techniques, including those of classroom management for practical application, are presented. Music majors must demonstrate continuous growth in ability. Recitals are regularly presented, affording students opportunities to appear as soloists. As with all ORU seniors, music majors are required to prepare a culminating activity: a recital, a project or a paper. This activity will be selected with the direction of their advisor according to the specific music program enrolled. Outcomes With a degree from the ORU Music Department you will be equipped for teaching in public and private schools, teaching in private studios, performing in professional music organizations, working in related music fields and church ministries.
