Concentration Areas Arts This concentration emphasizes general studies in music with an applied area of study. Students chose their applied areas of music study from among the following choices: Voice Brass--trumpet, trombone, French horn, baritone horn, tuba Strings--violin, viola, cello, double bass Woodwinds--flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon Percussion Guitar Harp Electric bass Keyboard--piano, organ Weekly participation in vocal, keyboard, orchestral instruction or an audio workstation lesson is an integral part of this concentration. Additionally students participate in an in-depth study focusing on the history of Western music and the development of styles and literature of music in Europe and America. Technology Students selecting the technology concentration will develop a solid foundation of recording technology and applied theoretical studies. Continuing to build on this foundation, students spend one semester of their junior year at the Recording Workshop in Chillicothe, Ohio. This educational complex specializes in training audio engineers, offering ORU music arts majors an outstanding opportunity to gain experience in their field. Music majors must demonstrate continuous growth in ability. Recitals are regularly presented, affording students opportunities to appear as soloists. As with all ORU seniors, music majors are required to prepare a culminating activity: a recital, a project or a paper. This activity will be selected with the direction of their advisor according to the specific music program enrolled. Outcomes With a degree from the ORU Music Department you will be equipped for teaching in public and private schools, teaching in private studios, performing in professional music organizations, working in related music fields and church ministries.
