Doctor's degree Mechanical and Systems Engineering from Ohio University - Main Campus is a Campus Ph.D Mechanical Engineering degree that prepares you for a Engineering career. An interdisciplinary Ph.D. is offered with two specialty areas: industrial and systems engineering , and mechanical engineering. Admission to the program is restricted to students who wish to study in one of the two specialties. An M.S. in engineering or a related field is required for admission. Further admissions information is available from the associate dean for research and graduate studies of the Russ College of Engineering and Technology. A acceptable plan of study is developed on an individual basis by the student?s advisor and dissertation advisory committee. Each plan of study must include the capstone synthesis course. In addition, students must include courses appropriate to the selected specialization track. At least 12 credit hours at the 500 level or higher from any two departments in the Russ College of Engineering and Technology or 8 credit hours at the 500 level or higher from any three departments must be included on the plan of study. A minimum of 20 credit hours of the course work must be at the 600 level or above and at least 10 credit must be at the 700 level or above. All plans of study must include at least 90 credit hours, including at least 45 credit hours for the dissertation and 45 credit hours of course work, above the MS degree and must be approved by the student?s dissertation advisory committee, the specialization track coordinator, and the chair of the Steering Committee. Each student must satisfactorily complete a qualifying examination near the beginning of the program and a comprehensive examination near the completion of all coursework. The qualifying exam tests a student?s know ledge of fundamentals needed to study advanced coursework.
